French Quarter police arrest man on suspicion of hate crime after NOPD cruiser damaged

New Orleans Police in the French Quarter arrested a man on suspicion of hate crime-related charges after a marked patrol unit was damaged near the intersection of Bourbon and Saint Philip streets Halloween night.

Police said an Eighth District police sergeant was standing approximately 10 feet away from his marked patrol unit on Oct. 31, when he witnessed a man identified as Nicholas Cooper, 25, look into the vehicle’s interior and began to rip the passenger side mirror from its mount.

Cooper then punched the vehicle’s exterior with his fist to attempt to break the vehicle’s window and dent the body, police said. Cooper was arrested immediately.

Cooper was booked on suspicion of a hate crime against a police officer, institutional vandalism and resisting a police officer.

Police estimate the cost of the damage to the police vehicle was about $500.

Parking restrictions, traffic control planned for ‘Joyride’ filming in the French Quarter

Parking restrictions and traffic control measures will be implemented on Thursday and Friday to filming scenes for the movie “Joyride” in the French Quarter, including on Bourbon Street, according to production officials.

No parking signs will be posted on Thursday starting at 12 a.m. and until 12 p.m. in the upper 900 block of Bourbon Street.

Then starting on Friday at 12 a.m. and until 12 p.m., no parking signs will be posted in the 900 and 1000 blocks of Bourbon Street, the 700 and 800 blocks of Saint Philip Street and in the 1000 block of Dauphine Street.

Additionally, no parking signs will be posted from 12 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday in the along the river side of the 900 and 1000 blocks of Bourbon Street.

On Friday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., uniformed security officers will be conducting westbound intermittent traffic control at the intersection of St. Philip and Dauphine streets, and southbound intermittent traffic controls at the intersection of Bourbon and Dumaine streets, according to production officials.

Production officials said actual filming will occur on Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. They added that all driveways and handicap zones will be respected and kept clear during filming.

2 women sustain gunshot injuries in Bourbon Street shooting

Two women sustained gunshot injuries Sunday in an early morning shooting on Bourbon Street, according to New Orleans Police.

The shooting occurred at about 12:13 a.m. in the 500 block of Bourbon Street, when the two victims reported hearing gunshots, according to the NOPD’s major offense log.

Police officials said both victims, aged 28 and 54, sustained gunshot wounds. One was treated at the scene and the other victim was transported to a local hospital, according to the NOPD.

The suspected shooter was described as a Black male, who the police didn’t identify.

VW Bug sought in connection to armed robbery near Gov. Nicholls, Bourbon streets

New Orleans Police are searching for two alleged suspects in a stolen Volkswagen Bug who robbed two victims with a gun near Governor Nicholls and Bourbon streets earlier this month.

The incident was reported at about 12:32 a.m. on Oct. 4, when two victims were robbed by the two suspects in a black 2018 VW Bug near the intersection, and then fled the scene, according to NOPD.

Eighth District police said the VW Bug was reported stolen in the 2000 block of Royal Street on Sept. 16. The vehicle is registered in Louisiana with a license plate number of 544EBN and its identification number is 3VW5DAAT0JM515839, police said.

The victims weren’t identified and the identities of the suspects weren’t immediately determined, according to the NOPD.

Police added that they are unsure if the license plate is still attached and if the vehicle is located, to use caution because the occupants may be armed.

NOFD crews extinguish residential fire on Bourbon Street

Crews on Thursday extinguished a fire that broke out at a residence on Bourbon Street, according to officials.

The blaze was reported at about 5:43 a.m. in the 900 block of Bourbon Street, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.

Officials activated a one-alarm response, which requires at least two engines, a rescue unit, ladder truck and a battalion chief.

Logs show the call was cleared in about 15 minutes. No injuries were reported and information on damage to the residence was not immediately available.
