New Orleans Police in the French Quarter arrested a man on suspicion of hate crime-related charges after a marked patrol unit was damaged near the intersection of Bourbon and Saint Philip streets Halloween night.
Police said an Eighth District police sergeant was standing approximately 10 feet away from his marked patrol unit on Oct. 31, when he witnessed a man identified as Nicholas Cooper, 25, look into the vehicle’s interior and began to rip the passenger side mirror from its mount.
Cooper then punched the vehicle’s exterior with his fist to attempt to break the vehicle’s window and dent the body, police said. Cooper was arrested immediately.
Cooper was booked on suspicion of a hate crime against a police officer, institutional vandalism and resisting a police officer.
Police estimate the cost of the damage to the police vehicle was about $500.
