A blood drive is scheduled at Buffa’s Saturday for the husband of a WWOZ radio broadcaster after he was shot multiple times during an attempted home invasion last month.

Joe Cooper, the husband of WWOZ’s Leslie Cooper, was shot four times during an attempted home invasion at about 3:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of St. Roch Avenue, according to Doyle Cooper, Joe’s son.

Cooper reportedly blocked a small group of men attempting to enter his home and was shot in the process. One bullet nicked his lung, another lacerated his liver and he was shot once in each leg, according to a friend.

The blood drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Buffa’s, located at 1001 Esplanade Avenue. Free red beans and rice will be provided to those who donate.

A GoFundMe set up by his son has so far generated more than $107,000 out of a $150,000 goal.

“Me and my family could use a little help so we don’t have to worry about bills in a time we are so focused on my dad’s wellbeing,” said Doyle Cooper. “If you can help at all we would be forever grateful. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He’s gonna need them!”
