A male pedestrian died after he was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run collision near the intersection of Canal and North Rampart streets early Sunday morning, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
First District police responded to a call of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle near the intersection at about 5:33 a.m. and upon arrival, located an adult male who was unresponsive, according to the NOPD, adding that the man was declared dead at the scene.
An initial investigation revealed that the victim, who wasn’t identified, was struck by a white Chevrolet Camaro, which police said fled the scene after the collision. The Camaro was later found abandoned in Metairie, according to the NOPD.
Officials said that investigators are currently in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the person or people responsible for the incident, and did not release any further details.
The victim’s identity will be released by the Orleans Parish Coroner after an autopsy and notification of his family, according to the NOPD.
