Crews from the New Orleans Fire Department extinguished a fire that broke out Monday inside of a room of a Iberville Street hotel they said was the result of a burning electrical transformer.
The fire was reported at about 3:26 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott New Orleans Hotel, located at 910 Iberville St., where an electrical transformer was burning inside of a room on the first floor, according to the NOFD.
Firefighters first arrived on scene at 3:30 p.m. and reported heavy smoke coming from the electrical vault room, officials said, adding that the multi-story building was evacuated as the NOFD struck a second-alarm three minutes late for extra manpower at the scene.
Entergy Electric and Gas cut power to the building as fire crews used extinguishers to knock the flames down, the NOFD said.
Fire officials said that shutting off the electricity also cut power to most buildings in the area, resulting in multiple calls to businesses from people who were trapped in elevators.
By 4 p.m., the NOFD said crews contained the blaze to the room of origin and added that the fire caused no structural damage to the building. No injuries were reported.
A total of 46 NOFD personnel and 17 units responded to the scene. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
