Man arrested after fake bomb threat prompts NOPD response, Jackson Square evacuation

New Orleans Police arrested a 42-year-old man following a report of a fake bomb threat near the intersection of Decatur and St. Ann streets Friday.

The threat was reported at about 9 p.m., prompting the evacuation of Jackson Square and a portion of Decatur Street, according to New Orleans Police.

Technicians later determined the package was not a bomb, according to New Orleans Police.

Police detained a man, identified as Steve Nguyen, who was later arrested and booked into Orleans Parish Justice Center on suspicion of one count related to a fake explosive device shortly after 3 p.m. No bail amount was listed.

The incident was reported roughly 30 minutes after a police standoff in the 500 block of Dauphine Street.
