The 700 block of Conti Street between Royal and Bourbon streets will be closed intermittently for approximately one week starting on Dec. 2 for utility upgrades.
Lane closures will occur between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day and will reopen to vehicular traffic, according to New Orleans spokeswoman LaTonya Norton.
Commuters are asked to be mindful of workers and to travel at reduced speeds in this area.
Entergy Gas, New Orleans’s Department of Public Works contractor, temporarily closed the block to allow crews to upgrade utility lines in order to avoid conflicts with the city’s reconstruction project and potential delays.
The city plans to begin its portion of the reconstruction project of water, sewer and drainage infrastructure starting in spring 2021, with an expected completion date in late 2021, according to Norton.
The reconstruction project is part of the $2.3 billion taxpayer-funded Capital Improvement Plan adopted by the City Council on Sept. 24, 2019. The five-year plan will pay for “permanent” physical improvements to the city’s infrastructure and facilities, including roads, police and fire stations, museums and community centers.

The City is in the process of designing a full reconstruction project of Conti Street between Bourbon and Chartres streets. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric will upgrade their utilities in advance of the City’s project to avoid conflicts during construction and potential construction delays. Their work in the 700 block of Conti Street began in June 2020. The City plans to begin its portion of the reconstruction project (water, sewer and drainage) in spring 2021. The entire project is expected to be completed in late 2021, weather permitting.
